This club has hosted significant golf championships, including the 1965 U.S. Open, the 1992 PGA Championship, and was set to host the 2018 PGA Championship. Originally characterized by its spacious residential lots, Town and Country was first incorporated as a village in 1950.

This initial incorporation, alongside the creation of a Public Safety Department offering both firefighting and police services, aimed to reduce fire insurance rates for local residents. In 1974, the village transitioned to city status to support the growing needs of its modest government, driven by the need for higher property tax revenue as the maximum tax rate for a village was insufficient. The city expanded significantly in 1983, more than doubling in size due to the annexation of a large western area. This expansion led to the city maintaining its own police department and contracting out fire and EMS services to a nearby fire district.

While the original charm of the city, with its expansive lots, white fences, and grazing horses, has become less common, there are still a few areas that maintain this character. Several large tracts of land remain undeveloped, offering a peaceful, green residential environment that contrasts with the denser development typical of St. Louis County. Commercial development in Town and Country is limited, with the most significant commercial areas located on the periphery of the city, along major regional roads, and at the intersections of key thoroughfares.
