With a population of 79,329 as recorded in the 2010 census, it stands as the largest city in St. Charles County and the seventh-largest in Missouri.

The city traces its origins to 1856 when Nicholas Krekel established it. It was named in honor of John O’Fallon, the President of the North Missouri Railroad. O’Fallon retains its historical roots, with a post office bearing its name operational since 1859. The St. Mary’s Institute of O’Fallon, included in the National Register of Historic Places in 2007, further contributes to the city’s rich historical fabric.
