Florissant, MO Firewood & Delivery Areas

Florissant, a suburb situated in northern St. Louis County, Missouri, is recognized as a second-ring suburb of St. Louis. According to 2017 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, Florissant has a population of 51,443, making it Missouri’s 13th largest city.

The exact time of the first settlers’ arrival in Florissant is unclear, but it is one of Missouri’s earliest settlements, possibly founded around the same time as St. Louis. The community’s civil governance began in 1786, and historical records from 1787, based on Spanish archives in Havana, show Florissant had 40 residents and seven plantations. Known as “Fleurissant” by French settlers and “St. Ferdinand” under Spanish governance, the village was a quintessential French settlement with its communal lands and fields.

Originally an independent town and now an inner suburb of St. Louis, Florissant developed around the St. Ferdinand parish. Until 1889, it was primarily French-speaking, with German-speaking residents in the southern part of the city. The arrival of the first train line in 1878, connecting St. Louis City to Normandy, was a notable development in transportation, although train service to Florissant ceased on November 14, 1931.

Post-World War II, Florissant underwent significant growth, evolving from a small village to a large suburban area. Developers like Alfred H. Mayer Co. were instrumental in this expansion, building residential subdivisions on erstwhile farmlands and vacant lots. From 1947 to 1980, about 18,000 homes were built, and the population peaked at approximately 76,000 in the mid-1970s, making Florissant the largest city in St. Louis County at the time.
