Well-dried firewood, known as seasoned wood, has achieved a sufficiently low moisture content, enabling it to combust easily. The seasoning process typically spans up to a year, with some highly dense hardwoods requiring more than two years for optimal drying. Seasoned wood not only burns with greater heat intensity but also sustains a longer and cleaner burn.
Timber loggers extract trees for various purposes, such as sawmills for flooring, furniture, and veneer. In this process, the tree tops are left for further processing, allowing us to identify the specific types of wood in our inventory. At Dobbelare Distributing, our primary focus lies in hardwoods like Oak, Cherry, Hickory, White Birch, and Maple. We offer the flexibility of delivering a mix of these hardwoods or specific species to your location, along with the service of stacking them for your convenience.
Freshly cut or unseasoned firewood, characterized by higher moisture content, tends to release less heat when burned. In contrast, dry or “seasoned” firewood has undergone the process of cutting, splitting, and drying for a period exceeding one year. The moisture content of firewood plays a crucial role in its combustion properties and the availability of BTUs (British Thermal Units) for heating purposes. Seasoned wood typically maintains a moisture content ranging from 25% to 20%.
Beware of unscrupulous vendors who may sell unseasoned firewood at an exceptionally low price, misleadingly marketing it as seasoned. If the pricing appears too good to be true, there’s a likelihood that the firewood is not adequately seasoned. At Chicago Distributing, we stand by the quality of our firewood, guaranteeing that it is thoroughly seasoned and ready for burning at the time of purchase.
A complete cord of wood constitutes the volume that can be stacked into 128 cubic feet. To provide a visual representation, envision a stack measuring 4 feet in height, 4 feet in width, and 8 feet in length. This quantity is roughly equivalent to the amount that would fill about two full-size pickup trucks, with the wood neatly stacked up to the top of the truck sides.

To optimize outcomes, it’s advisable to arrange wood in a raised position, preferably in an open space that receives ample sunlight and airflow. Shielding your woodpile from rain and snow can be achieved by covering only the top portion, ensuring protection without compromising exposure to essential sun and wind elements.
According to most environmental sources, burning firewood for heat will not hurt the environment since it releases no more greenhouse gases than would be produced if the wood simply rotted on the forest floor. Trees actually recycle carbon dioxide absorbing it as they grow and release it when they decompose or burn.
A British Thermal Unit (BTU) represents the quantity of heat energy required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. It serves as the standardized unit of measurement for expressing the energy content of a fuel and the heat output of any heat-generating device. Therefore, a higher BTU rating for a specific type of firewood, such as Oak, indicates that it will generate more heat compared to a variety with a lower BTU rating, like Pine.
The wood pieces come pre-split and are trimmed to a length ranging from 16 to 19 inches.
Typically, our average customer utilizes one cord per season, translating to the burning of fires approximately 1 to 2 times per week, depending on the winter conditions
